A September wedding on the North Fork. Linen, salt air, and a forecast nobody trusted. It held until the last dance.

Rain was forecast for four. It came at five past, for six minutes.

Close detail of hands fastening the row of buttons at the back of a white satin dress
2:10 p.m. Thirty-one buttons. Her sister did every one.
Two gold wedding bands resting on the edge of a cream paper card
A bouquet of white anemones and roses lying beside a pair of white heels on a dark floor
The rings, then the shoes, then everybody calmed down.
A couple kissing on a grassy bluff with a wide, pale landscape and cloudy sky behind them
The bluff behind the vineyard. Wind straight off the Sound.
A couple embracing on a wooden dock over calm water, the bride holding a pale bouquet
The old ferry dock, 6:48 p.m.
Two hands with new wedding rings resting on a bouquet of cream roses
The hem of a white dress and a pair of lace shoes stepping through long grass
Ten minutes after. Shoes off by eight.

It held until the last dance.

Long reception tables set with linen, glassware and small flower arrangements under a white tent
Long tables, no head table. Their call, and the right one.
Black-and-white photo of a bride and groom about to kiss, her veil lifting in the wind
Last light. The veil did what veils do.

Notes

A. and R. asked for no shot list, only one request: “Make it look like the weather.” So we followed the light, from a hazy noon to a clear blue hour, and kept the posed portraits to fifteen minutes on the bluff.

Half the day was shot on 35mm film. The gallery arrived in three weeks; the linen-bound book, a month after that.
